He won the FIFA World Cup in 1998 and the UEFA European Championship in 2000 as part of the national team. Desailly is also an ambassador for UNICEF from Ghana.

Early Life and Career

Born as Odenke Abbey, Marcel Desailly changed his name after his mother married a French diplomat who adopted all the children. In 1992, Desailly joined Marseille and won the UEFA Champions League with the club the following year. In 1994, he repeated this success with his new club, Milan. As a player for Milan, he also won two "Scudetto" titles in 1994 and 1996.

Time at Chelsea and Retirement

Desailly then moved to the English club, Chelsea, where he played until the end of the 2003/04 season. After the 2004 European Championship, he retired from international football, having the highest number of appearances for the French national team at that time (116). This record was later surpassed by another defender, Lilian Thuram. In 2004, Desailly transferred to the Qatari club, Al-Gharafa, where he became the team's captain. Under the guidance of French coach Bruno Metsu, they won the Qatari championship in 2005. Desailly then moved to Qatar, where they finished in second place. He retired from professional football after this.

International Career

Desailly made his debut for the French national team in 1993, but became a regular starter only in 1996. He was a key member of the team that won the 1998 World Cup. After the tournament, Desailly became the captain of the national team, as the previous captain, Didier Deschamps, retired. In 2001 and 2003, the French national team won the Confederations Cup. In April 2003, Desailly set a record for the most appearances for the French national team. He retired in this status after the 2004 European Championship.
