Early Life and Education
Marsha Ien was born on July 29, 1969, in Toronto, Canada, to Joel and Vilna Ien. Her father emigrated from Trinidad and Tobago to pursue studies at the University of Toronto. Descended from African slaves, Ien's early exposure to media began at age 10 when she appeared on the Christian children's television show "Circle Square." She later graduated from Ryerson University's School of Radio and Television Arts (RTA School of Media).
Journalism Career
Early Career and CTV NewsIen began her broadcasting career in Hamilton at CHCH in 1991. In 1997, she joined CTV Atlantic as a reporter. Her breakthrough came in 2003 when she became the co-host of CTV's daily morning news program "Canada AM." For over a decade, she anchored the show, providing news and interviews.
The Social and Beyond
From 2017 to 2020, Ien hosted CTV's daytime talk show "The Social." She also participated in the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2010 Winter Olympics and served as a visiting professor at her alma mater, Ryerson University's RTA School of Media. In 2008, she traveled to Sierra Leone with Journalists for Human Rights to conduct training seminars for journalists.
Political Career
Parliamentary ElectionFollowing the resignation of Finance Minister Bill Morneau, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Ien as the Liberal candidate for the Toronto Centre by-election in September 2020. She was elected to the House of Commons on October 26, 2020, securing 41.98% of the votes.
Ministerial Appointment
On October 26, 2021, Ien was appointed Minister for Women, Gender Equality, and Youth by Trudeau. She became the first Black woman to serve in the Canadian government since Jean Augustine left in 2004.
Personal Life
Ien divorced her husband, Lloyd Exeter, in 2018. They have two children together, a daughter named Blaize and a son named Dash.
Authorship
Ien published her memoir, "Off Script: Living Out Loud," in October 2020, sharing her personal experiences, journalistic career highlights, and encounters with notable individuals.
