Early Life and Political Beginnings
Born to a farm laborer, Józef Wollenberg's revolutionary journey began in 1885 when he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in Berlin. Returning home to Poland, he became a member of the First Proletariat party. In 1885, he was arrested and later escaped prison in 1887, fleeing to Switzerland.
Involvement in Proletariat Organizations
In the same year, he arrived in Warsaw illegally. Following the dissolution of the First Proletariat, Wollenberg co-founded and led the Second Proletariat in 1888. Residing in London from 1891, he was apprehended crossing the border into the Russian Empire in 1893.
Membership in the Polish Socialist Party in Prussia and the Social Democratic Party of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania (SDKPiL)
Upon his release from prison in 1896, Wollenberg joined the Polish Socialist Party in Prussia. In 1904, he returned to Russian-occupied Poland and became a member of the SDKPiL.
Armed Resistance and Martyrdom
On April 27, 1904, Wollenberg's heroism was on display during a police raid on an underground printing press in Warsaw. Engaging in armed resistance, he killed four police officers and wounded several others. He was executed on September 8, 1905, at the Warsaw Fortress, a testament to his unwavering commitment to the revolution.
