A Cyclist's Journey to the Sea

Marcin Zarnecki, a 38-year-old Polish man suffering from retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), embarked on a 700-kilometer bicycle ride to the Adriatic Sea in Croatia. Losing sight in one eye and with only 50% vision remaining in the other, Zarnecki was determined to witness the beauty of the sea before losing his sight completely.

Overcoming Obstacles

Zarnecki's journey began in his hometown of Nowy Targ, Poland, and took him over 700 kilometers to the Croatian coast. Despite his disability, which rendered one eye blind and the other severely impaired, he pushed on through two weeks of grueling cycling.

A Warm Welcome

Upon arriving in Croatia, Zarnecki was met with overwhelming support from the local community. Residents invited him to stay in their homes after learning of his situation, including Anamaria and Alen Tomascovic, who welcomed him into their apartment during his return journey.

Social Media Support

Zarnecki's story inspired countless individuals after being shared on social media. A fundraising campaign was launched to help him return home and to cover the entrance fee to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a place he longed to visit but couldn't afford.

A New Opportunity

Amidst his newfound fame, Zarnecki returned home to more good news. After years of struggling to find employment despite holding a degree in gaida (a Balkan bagpipe), he was presented with an opportunity to showcase his musical talents.

Warsaw Concert

"Marcin told us his talents were ignored and he couldn't find a job because nobody took him seriously," said Anamaria. "Now, he will perform at a concert in Warsaw on July 29th. We are so happy for him."
