Early Life and Career in BrazilMehmet Topal, born Marco Aurélio Topal in Rio de Janeiro on December 15, 1977, began his football journey in his native Brazil. He honed his skills at Flamengo before embarking on an international adventure in 2001.
Move to Turkey and Adoption of Turkish Citizenship
Topal joined Trabzonspor in Turkey, where he impressed with his midfield prowess. In 2003, he made the move to Istanbul giants Fenerbahçe. It was during his time in Istanbul that he converted to Islam and took on the Turkish name Mehmet.
International Debut and Euros 2008
Topal's impressive performances earned him a call-up to the Turkish national team in 2006. He made his debut in 2007 and played a pivotal role in Turkey's run to the semi-finals of Euro 2008, appearing in four matches.
European Club Career
After the European Championship, Topal joined Real Betis in Spain. In 2010, he returned to Turkey to sign for Beşiktaş. He became a key member of the squad, helping them win the Turkish Cup in 2010/11 and the Süper Lig title in 2003/04, 2004/05, and 2006/07.
