Marcus Vitruvius Pollio
Early Life and EducationLittle is known about Marcus Vitruvius Pollio's early life. His surname, Vitruvius, is the only name that has survived. It is believed that he was born as a free Roman citizen in Campania, where he received an architectural education.
Military Engineering
During the Roman civil war, Vitruvius served under Julius Caesar in the construction of military machinery. As a military engineer, he developed and designed ballistae and other siege weapons.
Architectural Projects
Vitruvius's most notable architectural projects include the Basilica in Fano and the design of a Roman aqueduct. He is also credited with developing an ergonomic system of proportioning, which later became known as the "Vitruvian Man" in art and architecture.
De Architectura
A Landmark TreatiseVitruvius's seminal work, "Ten Books on Architecture" (De architectura libri decem), is the only surviving ancient treatise on architecture. Dedicated to Emperor Augustus, it summarizes Greek and Roman architectural knowledge and discusses urban planning, engineering, and aesthetics.
Limited Recognition
Despite its significance, Vitruvius's treatise received little contemporary attention. Only a few ancient authors mentioned it, suggesting that his work may not have gained widespread recognition during his lifetime.
Rediscovery in the Renaissance
During the medieval period, Vitruvius's treatise was preserved in over 80 manuscripts. However, it gained prominence during the Renaissance. The rediscovery of his work by humanist Poggio Bracciolini in the 15th century sparked the Italian Renaissance and profoundly influenced architectural development.
Legacy as a Theoretical Architect
Vitruvius was the first architectural theorist to propose a theory for the origins of architecture. He emphasized the balance between theory and practice, defined aesthetic principles, and established the relationship between human scale and building scale. His theories remained influential until the 19th century.
