Kaja Kallas
Kaja Kallas is an Estonian politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Estonia since 2021. She is a member of the Reform Party and has held various positions in government, including Minister of Social Affairs and Deputy Speaker of the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament).
Early Life and Career
Kallas was born in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1977. She studied law at the University of Tartu and worked for the Estonian operations of Statoil before entering politics. In 1999, she was elected to both the Riigikogu and the Tallinn City Council.
Political Career
Kallas became Deputy Mayor of Tallinn in 2001 and Mayor of Tallinn in 2002. She served in this role until 2007, when she became Minister of Social Affairs in Andrus Ansip's government.
From 2007 to 2009, Kallas implemented significant reforms in the social welfare system, including introducing a child allowance and reforming the pension system. She also played a key role in Estonia's transition to a flat income tax.
Prime Minister of Estonia
In 2021, Kallas became the first female Prime Minister of Estonia. Her government has focused on economic growth, innovation, and education. She has also been vocal in support of Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Personal Life
Kallas was married to Estonian politician Igor Grazin from 2002 to 2014. They have one son, Kaspar.
