Margaret Archer: A Pioneer in Sociology
Margaret Archer is an acclaimed English sociologist who has made significant contributions to the field of sociology.
Early Life and Education
Archer received her Bachelor's degree (1964) and Doctorate of Philosophy (1967) from the University of London. She has held appointments at Cambridge University, the London School of Economics, and since 1973, at the University of Warwick in Coventry. In 1979, she was promoted to the rank of Professor.

On April 12, 2014, Pope Francis appointed Margaret Archer as the President of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. This made her the first woman to be elected to this prestigious position.
International Recognition
Archer was the first woman elected President of the International Sociological Association (1986-1990). She is a founding member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and the British Academy of Social Sciences.
Theoretical Contributions
Archer is affiliated with the sociological school of thought known as "critical realism." She is known for her critique of Anthony Giddens' theory of structuration. She introduced the terms "conflationalism" and "elisionism" to sociological discourse.
