Biography of Margaret Beckett

Margaret Beckett was born on January 15, 1943, in the town of Ashton-under-Lyne, UK. She grew up in a family of a carpenter. She attended the Scientific and Technological Institute at the University of Manchester, where she specialized in metallurgy.

Entry into Politics

In 1964, Beckett joined the Transport and General Workers' Union, becoming a member that she still remains part of for over 40 years. She conducted economic research for the Labour Party from 1970, focusing on education and science.

In October 1974, Beckett was elected to the British Parliament and began working on education and science-related issues. However, she faced defeat in the 1979 elections and lost her parliamentary seat. She was re-elected to the House of Commons in 1992 and played a crucial role in the Labour Party's parliamentary faction.

Political Career

Beckett served as the "Minister of Health" and later as the "Minister of Trade and Industry" in Tony Blair's shadow cabinet from 1995. Two years later, after the Labour Party's victory in the elections, she became the Minister of Trade and Industry. Beckett has been a veteran member of the Labour Party and has held various ministerial positions.

In 2007, Beckett replaced Jack Straw as the head of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, becoming the first female Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the history of the United Kingdom. Jack Straw, in turn, took up the position of Leader of the House of Commons.

Personal Life

Margaret Beckett has been married to Lionel Beckett, a Labour Party official, since 1979. She has had a long and successful career in politics, serving in various ministerial roles and making significant contributions to the Labour Party and the British Parliament.
