Biography of Margaret Drabble

Margaret Drabble, an English writer, was born on June 5, 1939, in Sheffield, Yorkshire. She attended Mount School in York and Newnham College, Cambridge University, where she studied literature and received her academic degree in 1960.

Early Works

Drabble's first novel, "A Summer Bird Cage" (1963), explores the rivalry between two sisters - a brilliant graduate of Oxford University and a beautiful woman looking for a husband. Her novel "The Garrick Year" (1964) tells the story of the heroine's extramarital affairs. In "The Millstone" (1965), a pregnant daughter of socialist intellectuals finds herself alone among her well-intentioned friends.

Later Works

Some of Drabble's later novels include "The Needle's Eye" (1972), an analysis of a complex love story; "The Realms of Gold" (1979), which follows the journey of an anthropologist heroine to her lover, legendary ruins in Africa, and her family heritage; "The Ice Age" (1977), a panoramic view of the social structure of contemporary England; and "The Middle Ground" (1980), an exploration of the crisis period in the life of a middle-aged divorced journalist who seeks to find herself.

Other Works

In addition to her novels, Drabble also wrote a monograph on Arnold Bennett (1974) and edited the fifth edition of "The Oxford Companion to English Literature" (1985). Her novels "The Radiant Way" (1987) and "The Gates of Ivory" (1992) further showcase her literary prowess.
