Margaret Dumont: The Beloved "Fifth Marx Brother"

Margaret Dumont was an American comedic actress best known for her collaborations with the Marx Brothers, appearing in seven of their classic film comedies. Groucho Marx famously referred to her as the "fifth Marx brother" due to their close, fruitful, and successful partnership.

Early Life and Career

Before her film career, Dumont honed her craft on the stage, performing in theater and vaudeville. During the 1910s, she briefly withdrew from acting to focus on her marriage to millionaire John Moller Jr. Following his untimely death in 1918, Dumont returned to Broadway and subsequently made her film debut.

Collaboration with the Marx Brothers

Her collaboration with the Marx Brothers began on Broadway in 1925 and continued on the silver screen. Together, they created a series of unforgettable films, including:

"The Cocoanuts" (1929)

"Animal Crackers" (1930)
"Duck Soup" (1933)
"A Night at the Opera" (1935)
"A Day at the Races" (1937)
"At the Circus" (1939)
"The Big Store" (1941)
Later Years and Legacy

Dumont's final film appearance came in "The Patsy" (1964), just a year before her passing from a heart attack. Her portrayal of the dignified and exasperated foil to the Marx Brothers' antics solidified her status as a comedic force in her own right. To this day, her performances continue to entertain audiences and inspire aspiring actors.
