Maggie Q, a Vietnamese-American actress and model, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father is of Polish-Irish descent while her mother is Vietnamese. Her parents met in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, where her father was serving in the US military. Maggie has two older sisters and two older half-brothers. As a child, she aspired to become a veterinarian and excelled in sports, particularly track and field and swimming. She graduated from Mililani High School in 1997.

At the age of 17, Maggie began modeling in Tokyo, Japan, at the behest of a friend. She later moved to Taipei, Taiwan, and finally Hong Kong, where her career gained traction.

During her time in Hong Kong, Maggie Q was noticed by Jackie Chan, who saw "great star potential" in her. Chan took her under his wing, teaching her martial arts and helping her break into the film industry.
