Margaret Turnbull is an American astronomer known for her work in the field of planetary habitability and the study of solar-type stars. She earned her Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Arizona in 2004, which is renowned for its achievements in astronomy and astrophysics.

Catalog of Nearby Habitable Systems
In 2002, Turnbull collaborated with Jill Tarter, a prominent astronomer and director of the Center for SETI Research, to develop the 'HabCat' or Catalog of Nearby Habitable Systems. This catalog consists of star systems that are potentially habitable and located within 100 light-years from Earth. In the following year, Turnbull further identified thirty star systems from the initial list of five thousand in the 'HabCat.' Currently, the catalog includes 17,129 star systems.

Selected Stars for SETI and TPF Projects
In 2006, Margaret Turnbull compiled two shortlists, each containing five stars. The stars from the first list are Beta Canum Venaticorum, located 27 light-years away from the Sun; the binary star HD 10307 in the Andromeda constellation, 41 light-years away; the binary star HD 211415 in the Grus constellation, 44 light-years away; 18 Scorpii, which closely resembles the Sun, at a distance of 45.7 light-years; and 51 Pegasi, 50.1 light-years away. These stars serve as the primary focus of the SETI project using the Allen Telescope Array.
The second list consists of Turnbull's personal best candidates for the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) project. They include Epsilon Indi, 11.73 light-years away; Epsilon Eridani, 5.22 light-years away; 40 Eridani, 16.5 light-years away; Alpha Centauri B, 4.36 light-years away; and Tau Ceti.
Recognition and Legacy
In 2007, Margaret Turnbull was hailed as a "genius" on CNN for her work in cataloging stars that are most promising for hosting planets capable of sustaining life and giving rise to intelligent civilizations. In her honor, an asteroid was named 7863 Turnbull.
