Teresa Carreño: The Valkyrie of the Piano
Teresa Carreño, a Venezuelan-American pianist and composer, was renowned as the "Queen" and "Valkyrie" of the piano.
Early Life and Education
Born into a musical and literary family in Caracas, Venezuela, Teresa Carreño began her piano studies at an early age. In 1862, her family relocated to the United States, where she received primary instruction from Louis Moreau Gottschalk. At the tender age of ten, she made her debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and performed for President Abraham Lincoln at the White House.
European Sojourn
From 1866, Carreño primarily lived in Paris, where she became acquainted with renowned composers like Gounod and Rossini. She studied with Anton Rubinstein and performed alongside Franz Liszt. In 1873, she wed violinist Émile Sauret.
Return to the Americas and Marriages
Carreño returned to the United States in 1874 and briefly pursued opera. In 1876, she met tenor Giovanni Tagliapietra and married him three years later. Together, they formed an opera company that toured Venezuela, but the venture ultimately failed, leading to their divorce.
International Acclaim
In 1889, Carreño embarked on a successful tour of Germany and married composer Eugen d'Albert for the third time. She embarked on numerous tours throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Africa. In 1891, she performed in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Later Years and Legacy
Carreño's later years were spent in the Americas. During a concert tour of Cuba in 1917, she fell ill and passed away shortly after her return to New York City. Her funeral was attended by notables of the international music community, including Ignacy Paderewski, Walter Damrosch, and Mischa Elman.
Carreño's legacy includes approximately 40 piano, vocal, and chamber music compositions. The Teresa Carreño Foundation was established in Caracas, and a theater bears her name. She remains an iconic figure in the history of music and a symbol of female empowerment and artistic virtuosity.
