Biography of Maria Call
Maria Call, a British woman, fell victim to ovarian cancer. Over the past 7 years, she has undergone 8 extremely difficult courses of chemotherapy, but unfortunately, she was unable to defeat the malignant disease. Instead, the cancer spread to her lungs, liver, kidneys, and intestines. Two weeks ago, Maria was informed that there was no point in continuing chemotherapy as the last available treatment method had ceased to have any positive effect. With each passing treatment cycle, the breaks between them became shorter and shorter, yet the cancer still persistently returned to her body. Currently, Maria's only hope lies in a completely new and revolutionary treatment technique that involves the simultaneous use of two anticancer drugs.

A Revolutionary Treatment Approach
The newly proposed treatment technique aims to halt the blood flow to the tumors, destroying them and preventing their regeneration. Previously, the drugs fosbretabulin and pazopanib were not used together. Fosbretabulin is a vascular-disrupting agent, which destroys the blood cells that supply the cancerous tumors with necessary resources. Pazopanib, traditionally used to combat kidney cancer, inhibits the development of new blood vessels at the site of destruction. While this technique has not yet been tested in practice, Maria's physician, Professor Gordon Rustin, believes that the chances of a positive outcome are relatively high. According to Rustin, the blood supply is the Achilles' heel of the most dangerous tumors. By interrupting the blood flow, the tumor will first shrink and eventually die.
Challenges and Hope
However, there are several challenges to consider. The effect of fosbretabulin alone may not be sufficient, as cells capable of initiating the formation of new blood vessels are likely to survive at the edges of the tumor. The resumption of blood flow and the tumor's return to its harmful activities could occur within a few months. The experience of battling ovarian cancer has shown that it can reoccur 5-6 times. Additionally, cancer cells become more resistant to medication over time, rendering previous treatments ineffective. While medical researchers continue to search for new methods, finding a solution to the overall problem remains challenging.
A Promising Medication
After several years of searching for a suitable partner drug for fosbretabulin, medical professionals settled on pazopanib. Clinical trials have shown promising results, making it a potential candidate for real-world application. In theory, pazopanib should work better than avastin, another drug used in the treatment. Furthermore, pazopanib is available in pill form, while avastin is administered intravenously. Maria is scheduled to begin treatment with this new combination therapy later this month. She will be part of the initial phase of the experiment, where the optimal dosage of the drug will be determined, and its side effects will be evaluated. In addition to Maria, 17 other individuals will participate in this first phase.
A Journey of Hope
The idea of a miraculous pill capable of destroying such a dangerous disease may seem fantastical, but Maria desperately wants to believe in it. One can only hope that her faith will assist the drugs in accomplishing the task at hand. The second phase of the experiment, which will compare the effectiveness of the combination therapy with pure pazopanib treatment, is scheduled to begin in 2015.
