Biography of Maria Emilia Salerni
Maria Emilia Salerni is an Argentine tennis player. She was born in Rafaela, Santa Fe, Argentina, to Maria del Carmen Martin and Abelardo Salerni. She has two brothers, Fernando and Luciano, and two sisters, Mariana and Natalia. Salerni started playing tennis at the age of 4, introduced to the sport by her sister and parents.
Junior Grand Slam Champion
Salerni is a two-time winner of junior Grand Slam tournaments. She achieved both her victories at the US Open and Wimbledon in 2000. Interestingly, she faced the same opponent, Ukrainian tennis player Tatiana Perebiynis, in both finals. Salerni had the opportunity to win a third title at the French Open that year, but unfortunately, she lost in the final to Virginie Razzano of France. She was named the 2000 ITF Junior World Champion.
Professional Career and Achievements
Salerni competed in various ITF tournaments throughout her career, winning a total of 11 titles. Her first victory came on September 26, 1999, in Asuncion, Paraguay, followed by a win in Montevideo, Uruguay, on October 3, 1999. Just a week later, she became the champion in Santiago, Chile.
On April 23, 2000, Salerni claimed her first title outside of South America by defeating Vanessa Krauth in San Severo, Italy. Three weeks later, on May 14, 2000, she won another tournament in Caserta, Italy. She continued her winning streak in Germany, winning two consecutive tournaments on July 30 and August 6. After a significant gap, Salerni won her next championship in 2004, followed by another victory in 2006. Her last two titles were won in 2007.
Personal Life and Retirement
For a time, Salerni was in a relationship with Argentine tennis player Guillermo Canas, but they separated in 2007. In 2009, Salerni announced her retirement from professional tennis, influenced by a series of injuries she had suffered. Despite her success in Grand Slam tournaments, Salerni also participated in regular ITF tournaments, demonstrating her versatility and talent on the court.
