Early Life and Career
Born on October 25, 2002, in Kyiv, Ukraine, Marta Kostyuk's early life was filled with athleticism. Her father, Oleh, served as the technical director of the prestigious Antey Cup, and both her mother, Talina, and uncle, Taras, were former professional tennis players. Encouraged by her family's involvement in the sport, young Marta pursued tennis from a tender age, also achieving the rank of a Candidate Master of Sports in acrobatics.
Junior Success (2015-2017)
Kostyuk's prodigious talent began to shine through in her early teens. In 2015, she triumphed at the prestigious Orange Bowl, a respected junior tournament. The following year, she claimed victory at the Petits As, an unofficial world championship for 12-14-year-old tennis players. Her impressive junior career continued in 2017 when she won the Australian Open singles title, defeating top-seeded Rebecca Masarova. In September, she teamed up with Olga Danilovich to capture the US Open junior doubles title. By October, she had secured the year-end Junior Finals in Chengdu.
Adult Career Breakthrough (2018-2019)
Kostyuk's transition to adult tennis was equally impressive. In January 2018, she reached the third round of the Australian Open singles, falling to then-world No. 4 Elina Svitolina. This result propelled her to a career-high junior ranking of No. 5 and a WTA ranking of No. 243. She went on to win the ITF tournament in Bern and made her Fed Cup debut with a victory over world No. 26 Daria Gavrilova. In 2019, she claimed two more ITF Circuit titles and reached the quarterfinals of the WTA event in Strasbourg.
Top 50 Breakthrough and Injury (2021)
Kostyuk emerged as a top 50 singles player in 2021. In January, she reached the semifinals of the WTA-500 tournament in Abu Dhabi. At the French Open, she advanced to the fourth round before bowing out to eventual finalist Iga Swiatek. However, her year was marred by a shoulder injury that forced her to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics.
Triumph and Top 50 (2022-Present)
In March 2023, Kostyuk reached her first WTA 250 final in Austin, defeating Varvara Gracheva to secure the title. This victory boosted her ranking to within the top 40. She continued to impress at Wimbledon, defeating world No. 8 Maria Sakkari in the second round and breaking into the top 10. Following the tournament, she partnered with coach Sandra Zaniewska. Currently, Kostyuk is ranked 35th in the world and has a bright future ahead of her in professional tennis.
