Escape from MauthausenIn February 1945, as the horrors of World War II reached their peak, an extraordinary act of compassion unfolded in the rural community of Schwertberg, Austria. Amidst the chaos and fear, Maria Langthaler, a local woman, risked her life to shelter two Soviet prisoners of war who had escaped from the infamous Mauthausen concentration camp.
Out of approximately 500 escapees, only 11 survived the relentless pursuit of SS troops, police, and local civilians. The tragic events became known as the "Mühlviertler Hasenjagd" (Mühlviertel Hare Hunt).
Courage Under Fire
Langthaler's bravery extended over three months, as she secreted Mikhail Rybchinsky and Nikolai Tsemkalo from their pursuers. Her selfless actions defied the Nazi regime and provided a lifeline for the two men.
Recognition and Honor
In 2021, decades after the war, Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded Maria Langthaler with the Order of Courage. The honor recognized her unwavering heroism and self-sacrifice.
