Marianne Kirchgessner was a German glass harmonica player who achieved significant recognition in her time. Despite losing her sight at the tender age of four, she embarked on a remarkable musical journey that took her across Europe, including a visit to Saint Petersburg in 1798.
Stuttgart Roots and Early Training
Kirchgessner's musical education began under the tutelage of Josef Aloys Schmittbauer. With an unwavering determination, she overcame the limitations of her blindness and started performing publicly in 1791.
European Tours and Mozart's Enchantment
Her exceptional talent caught the attention of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was captivated by the ethereal sound of the glass harmonica during one of Kirchgessner's early concerts. Impressed by the instrument's unique qualities, Mozart composed two exquisite pieces, Adagio and Rondo (KV 617), specifically for her. These gems remain testament to the enduring legacy of both the glass harmonica and Kirchgessner's artistry.
The Enigmatic Demise
