Marie Bochet: A Paralympic Skiing Icon
Early Life and FamilyMarie Bochet was born to Yvonne and François Bochet, cheesemakers, with an underdeveloped left arm. Despite this physical difference, she developed a passion for skiing at the tender age of five.
Athletic Achievements
World Championships DominanceBochet made history at the 2013 World Championships, becoming the first skier to win gold in all five disciplines: downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom, and super combined. She repeated this feat in 2015.
Paralympic Glory
In 2014, Bochet dominated the Sochi Paralympics, claiming gold medals in downhill, super-G, super combined, and giant slalom. She replicated her success in 2018 in Pyeongchang, winning gold in the same events but replacing the super combined with the slalom.
World Cup Success
In addition to her world and Paralympic titles, Bochet has also excelled on the World Cup circuit. She finished second in the 2012 World Cup in both super-G and giant slalom.
Other Accolades
PhilanthropyBeyond her athletic accomplishments, Bochet is an active philanthropist. In 2014, she founded the association "Pour que Lana gravisse sa montagne" to support a girl named Lana with cerebral palsy and West syndrome.
Honors and Recognition
Bochet has been recognized for her exceptional achievements. In 2014, she became a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur and was awarded the Laureus Award for Best Female Para-Athlete. She is also a member of the International Paralympic Committee Athletes' Commission.
