Family and Education
France-Lise Charial was born into a family of dancers, with her father being French and her mother of Chinese-Vietnamese origin. She is the sister of dancer and choreographer Charles Jude.
Charial studied at the Paris Conservatory under Aldo Ciccolini, Jean Claude Pennetier (piano), and Jean Hubeau (chamber ensemble). She also holds a diploma in harp.
Awards and Recognition
Charial gained international recognition as a finalist in the Clara Haskil Piano Competition in 1989. She received the prestigious Victoire de la Musique award in 1995 as "Musical Discovery of the Year."
Musical Collaborations
Since meeting in 1986, Charial has become a favored performer of French composer Maurice Ohana. Her repertoire also includes works by André Jolivet, Henri Dutilleux, and other prominent French composers of the 20th century.
Charial is known for her interpretation of Brahms' music, having recorded five albums of his compositions. Together with violinist Pascal Fontanarosa, she recorded the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano. She has also released an album of works by Clara Schumann.
Charial has performed in ensembles with renowned musicians such as singer Mireille Delunsch, clarinetist Michel Portal, and cellist Luis Claret. She has a particularly strong musical partnership with pianist Jean François Heisser, collaborating on works for two pianos and piano four hands, including Brahms' Hungarian Dances.
