Early Life and Family

Marie-Julie Clary was born in Marseille, France, to silk merchant François Clary and his second wife, Françoise Rose Somis. She had a younger sister, Désirée (1777-1860), who married Jean Bernadotte in 1798 and became Queen of Sweden.

Marriage to Joseph Bonaparte

On August 1, 1794, Marie-Julie married Joseph Bonaparte, the elder brother of Napoleon. They had three daughters, two of whom survived to adulthood:

Zénaïde Charlotte Julie (1801-1854)

Charlotte Napoléone (1802-1839)
Royal Reigns
Queen Consort of Naples (1806-1808)

Marie-Julie ruled alongside her husband in the Kingdom of Naples from 1806 to 1808.

In 1808, Joseph was appointed King of Spain, and Marie-Julie became Queen Consort. However, their reign in Spain was cut short by the Peninsular War.
