Career Beginnings: Racing to Nacional

José Emilio Santamaría began his professional football career at Racing de Montevideo. In 1961, he transferred to another Montevideo club, Nacional.

Success with Nacional

At Nacional, Santamaría became a key player, contributing to the club's Uruguayan Championship victory in 1963. He also played a significant role in the team's run to the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1964. Nacional ultimately lost the final to Argentine club Independiente.

International Acclaim

Santamaría debuted for the Uruguay national team on December 7, 1959. He played a pivotal role in the team's triumph at the 1959 South American Championship, finishing second in the top scorers list with four goals. He later represented Uruguay at the 1962 FIFA World Cup, making one appearances.
