Mario Bertok was a Croatian chess grandmaster, born on December 14, 1929, in Zagreb, Croatia. He was a prominent figure in Yugoslav chess, representing his country in national and international competitions.

Early Career and Successes

Bertok participated in 15 Yugoslav Chess Championships, placing second in 1949 and 1960. In international tournaments, he achieved notable results, including third-fourth place in San Benedetto del Tronto (1956), second-third place in Bratislava (1957), and first-second place in Portoroz (1958). In 1959, he finished second in the Krakow International Tournament.

International Competitions

Bertok represented Yugoslavia in several major events. He competed in the 1960 Chess Olympiad, playing on the fourth board and scoring 7/13 points. He also participated in the first two European Team Championships and in matches between the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.

In the 1960 Budapest Zonal Tournament, Bertok placed second-fifth, and in the 1962 Stockholm Interzonal Tournament, he finished 17th-18th. These performances demonstrated his strength and consistency at the international level.

Later Years and Legacy

After the 1960s, Bertok continued to compete in international tournaments. He achieved top-four finishes in Reggio nell'Emilia in 1965, 1970, and third-fifth place in the 1977 Vinkovci International Tournament. Mario Bertok passed away on August 7, 2008, in Zagreb. He is remembered as one of the leading Croatian chess players and a strong representative of Yugoslavia on the international stage.
