Early Life and Career
Mario Varlien was born in Italy and began his football career as a forward for Fiume in 1926. He then moved to Pro Patria, where he made his professional debut against Bologna in 1927.
Juventus and National Team
In 1928, Varlien joined Juventus, where he spent the next 15 seasons. During this time, he earned the nickname "Varlien I" to distinguish him from his brother, Giovanni. With Juventus, Varlien won five Serie A titles (1930/31, 1931/32, 1932/33, 1933/34, 1934/35) and two Coppa Italia (1937/38, 1941/42).
Although Varlien was selected for the 1934 FIFA World Cup, he did not make an appearance in the tournament. His only international cap came on February 17, 1935, in a friendly against France.
Later Years
After leaving Juventus in 1944, Varlien played briefly for several other clubs, including Bologna and Vicenza, before retiring from professional football. He passed away in 1974.
