Marisha Dotson, a marriage and family therapist from Knoxville, Tennessee, was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, in her nose. The small pimple that began the cancer spread and left her with a devastated nose and unable to smile without a dental implant.

A Battle for Survival

After discovering the aggressive skin cancer had spread from a small pimple on her nose, Dotson was given only a 20% chance of survival. She underwent a grueling 15-hour surgery to remove the cancerous tissue and her nose. Surgeons discovered the cancer had spread deep into her facial tissue, describing it as a "jellyfish with cancerous tentacles."

Reconstructive Surgery and Complications

Following the initial surgery, Dotson underwent reconstructive surgery using skin from her forehead. However, additional cancerous growths emerged on her face, requiring multiple rounds of removal and skin grafts. After 30 surgeries in total, Dotson was declared "cancer-free."

Embracing Her Journey

Despite the disfigurement to her face, Dotson has chosen to embrace her journey. She refuses to dwell on the cosmetic aspects of her appearance, focusing instead on her survival. "Cancer took my nose and parts of my jaw, but it didn't take my spirit, so I'm going to keep fighting," she said.

A Testament to Resilience

Dotson credits her doctors, many of whom took reduced rates, for saving her life. Despite her massive medical bills, she is determined to receive a permanent dental implant and repay her debts. "Some of my friends call me a 'walking miracle,'" Dotson said. "And I don't argue them because that's exactly what I am."

A Message of Hope

Having lost her mother at age 16, Dotson's resilience has been remarkable. She serves as a testament to the human capacity for overcoming adversity and finds solace in the scars she has earned from her battle with cancer. "It's a symbol of my will to live, of the blood, sweat, and tears I shed to survive," she said.
