Mariska Magdalena Hargitay, an American film and television actress, was born on January 23, 1964, in Santa Monica, California, USA. She is a recipient of the Golden Globe and Emmy Award. Her mother, Jayne Mansfield, was an American actress and sex symbol of the 1950s, while her father, Mickey Hargitay, was a Hungarian who founded the "Mr. Universe" competition. Shortly after Mariska's birth, her parents divorced, and her mother remarried.

When Mariska was three and a half years old, the family was involved in a car accident while traveling together. Her mother and stepfather tragically lost their lives, but Mariska and her two brothers, who were sleeping in the back seat, were unharmed. Mariska and her brothers were subsequently adopted by their biological father, and she grew up in a large blended family, with two biological brothers, a stepsister, and two stepbrothers.

After graduating from high school, Mariska Hargitay attended the School of Theater, Film, and Television. In 1982, she won the "Miss Beverly Hills" competition and placed fourth in the "Miss California" competition.
