Head of Clan Fraser
Lady Saltoun, the 21st holder of the title, was the head of Clan Fraser of Philorth and the Scottish Clan Fraser from May 1, 1984, by decree of the Court of the Lord Lyon.
Birth and Ancestry
Flora Fraser was born on October 18, 1930, in Edinburgh, Scotland. As the only daughter of Alexander Fraser, 20th Lord Saltoun, and Dorothy Geraldine Welby, she inherited the title upon her father's death in 1979. Her maternal grandfather was Sir Charles Glynne Earle Welby, 5th Baronet.
Baronial Succession
Lady Saltoun's brother, Alexander Simon Fraser, was killed in action in 1944, making Flora the heir presumptive to the barony. Upon her father's passing, she became the 21st Lady Saltoun and took her seat in the House of Lords.
House of Lords Election
In 1999, the House of Lords Act 1999 removed 662 hereditary peers from the chamber. However, Lady Saltoun was among the 90 hereditary peers elected to remain. She was the only holder of a barony to retain a seat in the House of Lords as an elected hereditary peer until her retirement on December 12, 2014.
Marriage and Children
On October 6, 1956, Lady Saltoun married Alexander Ramsay of Mar at Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. They had three daughters:
- Katherine Fraser, 22nd Lady Saltoun, born October 11, 1957
- The Hon. Alice Elizabeth Margaret Ramsay of Mar, born July 8, 1961- The Hon. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Ramsay of Mar, born April 15, 1963
Passing
