Early Career and Patriotism
Niccolò Tommaseo (1802-1874), a renowned Italian writer and patriot, embarked on his literary journey during the papacy of Pius IX. His "Pio IX e l'Italia," a series of prose and verse in the style of Tyrtaeus, ignited his passion for national unity.
Venetian Secretary and Accusation
In 1848, Tommaseo played a pivotal role as Secretary of the Venetian Republic. However, his alleged promotion of socialist ideals led to his imprisonment. Undeterred, his writings continued to inspire a longing for Italian independence.
Exile and Eastern Sojourn
After his release, Tommaseo embarked on an extensive journey to the East. He published "Mente, Fantasia e Cuore" (1852) in Athens and faced exile from Bucharest in 1859 for his criticism of Napoleon III.
Return to Italy and Service
Upon returning to Italy in 1862, Tommaseo gained prominence as a secret agent for Foreign Minister Urbano Rattazzi. Subsequently, he served under the legendary Giuseppe Garibaldi, further solidifying his status as a fervent supporter of Italian unification.
