Club CareerMark Crossley, a celebrated Anglo-Welsh goalkeeper, has graced the fields of numerous prominent clubs, including Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, Millwall, Middlesbrough, Stoke City, Fulham, Sheffield Wednesday, and Oldham Athletic. His notable 13-year stint at Nottingham Forest, where he played 303 matches, cemented his status as a club legend and fan favorite.
After leaving Forest, Crossley moved to Middlesbrough but struggled to secure regular playing time. A loan spell at Stoke City followed, where he played sparingly. In 2003, he joined Fulham as a backup goalkeeper behind Edwin van der Sar and later Antti Niemi. During his three seasons with Fulham, he made 23 appearances across all competitions.
In 2006, Crossley was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship. During his time there, he made history by scoring his only career goal. In a match against Southampton, the Welsh shot-stopper ventured into the opposition's penalty area and headed in a corner, earning his team a 3-3 draw.
International Career
Crossley received call-ups to England's U-21 team in 1990, featuring in three matches. Unable to break into the senior England squad, he opted to represent Wales. Despite being a backup goalkeeper behind Neville Southall and Paul Jones, he made eight appearances for Wales. His most memorable outing was a 4-0 victory over Scotland in a friendly match in 2004.
Notable Achievements
Mark Crossley holds the distinction of being one of only three goalkeepers to have saved a penalty in an FA Cup Final. Along with Dave Beasant and Petr Cech, he joins an elite group of shot-stoppers who have made this rare feat.
Furthermore, Crossley is the only goalkeeper to have denied a penalty from Matthew Le Tissier, the enigmatic Southampton forward who scored an astonishing 48 out of 49 spot-kicks during his career.
