Mark Grieve: An American Conceptual Artist and Sculptor
Mark Grieve is a contemporary American conceptual artist and sculptor best known for his creation called 'Cyclisk'. Standing at 20 meters tall and weighing approximately 4.5 tons, 'Cyclisk' is a tower, obelisk, or stele constructed from old bicycles. It is located in Santa Rosa, California.

Early Life and Education
Mark Grieve was born in 1965. He attended the San Francisco Institute of Art and the College of Marin, where he studied ceramics. He also spent time in Japan, where he delved into the secrets of Japanese pottery.

Rise to Fame
In the 1980s and 1990s, Grieve began exhibiting his artwork in California, particularly at the Susan Cummins Gallery, gradually gaining recognition. Over the years, he became known for several projects, but it was in 2006 that Grieve and his colleague Ilana Spector received an unusual commission. They were tasked with creating art installations for public spaces in Santa Rosa, California, by the corporation 'Nissan'.

'Cyclisk': A Unique Creation
The idea proposed by Grieve and Spector was to construct an obelisk using old, discarded bicycles. Several hundred bicycles of various colors, sizes, and designs were used to create the 20-meter tall 'Cyclisk'. From a distance, the structure may not immediately reveal its composition, but upon closer inspection, one can see the compressed bicycles of different types. The obelisk has a somewhat Egyptian form.
Collaboration and Community Involvement
During the creation of 'Cyclisk', Grieve had to collaborate with a large number of cyclists who willingly participated in the project, readily providing the desired "material". People take pride in the fact that their bicycles, which have served their purpose, now have a second life and bring joy to the citizens of Santa Rosa.
Other Notable Projects
'Cyclisk' is not the only significant project Grieve has undertaken. In 2005 and 2006, he worked on the Burning Man Temple project, creating sculptural works for the festival. Additionally, together with his partner Ilana Spector, Grieve created a notable sculpture called the 'Pink Pig'. He also designed an arch using old bicycles and their parts.
Overall, 'Cyclisk' remains Grieve's most famous creation, becoming one of the main attractions of Santa Rosa.
