Biography of Mark Haddon
Early Life and EducationMark Haddon was born on September 26, 1962, in Northampton, England. From a young age, Mark had a love for books and began writing his own stories and poems while in secondary school. He never imagined that one day he would have his works published. After finishing school, he attended Merton College, one of the renowned colleges at the University of Oxford, where he studied English language and literature.
Work with Special Needs Children and Career in Art
After college, Mark worked in a field unrelated to his profession. For several years, he worked with people with physical disabilities, particularly children with developmental disorders. It was during this time that he developed a passion for painting and began creating his own artwork, focusing on impressionism. He even opened a small gallery where he sold his paintings.
Writing Career
It wasn't until 1997 that Mark began his career as a writer. His first book, a children's novella called "Gilbert's Gobstopper," was published in a limited edition and featured his own illustrations. The book was well-received among children, leading to the publication of more of Mark's children's stories. His series "Agent Z" became particularly popular, with some of the books serving as the basis for a children's sitcom on BBC.
Transition to Film Industry
Around the same time, Mark started working in the film industry, writing scripts for television series and feature films. One of his early screenplays, adapted for the film "Coming Down the Mountain," was highly regarded by critics. The film tells the story of two very different brothers who undergo personal transformations during a journey, gaining a new perspective on the world around them. Despite his early works going unnoticed by the general public, this film received critical acclaim.
Breakthrough with "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time"
The pinnacle of Mark's literary career came with the release of his novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time." The book, which portrayed the perspective of a 15-year-old boy named Christopher with probable autism, received positive reviews soon after its publication. Mark astoundingly captured the worldview of a teenager whose thinking operates differently from his peers. Readers flooded Mark with letters, curious about how he accurately portrayed the aspects of a child's thinking that diverged from society's norms. For his book, Mark received numerous prestigious awards, including the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and the Whitbread Book Awards.
Later Works and Personal Life
Mark's second novel, "A Spot of Bother," did not achieve the same level of popularity as his debut. Currently, Mark resides in England with his wife and two children. He is known to be a vegetarian and an ardent atheist.
