Biography of Mark Hurd
Mark Hurd was born in 1957 in New York. He attended Baylor University on a tennis scholarship and soon became the number one player on the team. In 1979, Hurd graduated from the university with a bachelor's degree in management.
After graduation, Hurd attempted a career in professional tennis but eventually started working in the Texas computer sales division of NCR Corporation in 1980. Over time, he rose through the ranks and held various leadership roles in sales and marketing divisions within the company.
In July 2000, Hurd was appointed as the Vice President of NCR and also became the President and CEO of Teradata, a subsidiary of NCR Corporation specializing in data storage solutions. In July 2001, he was appointed as the President of NCR and in September 2002, he assumed the additional role of CEO.
In March 2003, Hurd left his position at Teradata and became the President and CEO of NCR. Under his leadership, the company's revenue grew by 7% in 2004, reaching $6 billion, and the net income increased nearly fivefold to approximately $290 million.
In March 2005, Hurd was elected as the President and CEO of Hewlett-Packard (HP) by the board of directors. In April 2005, he assumed his new position and joined the board of directors.
In early 2006, Patricia Dunn, the Chairman of HP without executive authority, initiated an internal investigation into the leak of information from the board of directors' meeting. In September 2006, it was reported in the media that privacy rights of nine journalists, two HP employees, and seven members of the HP board of directors were violated during the investigation.
In late September 2006, Dunn resigned and Hurd took her place as the Chairman of the board of directors.
