Biography of Mark McMorris

Mark McMorris, a Canadian snowboarder, specializes in freestyle snowboarding, including tricks in slopestyle and big air. He became the first person in sports history to land a "backside triple cork 1440," a triple rotation trick. McMorris won gold medals in slopestyle at the X Games in 2012 and 2013. He also competed in slopestyle at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where he won a bronze medal, Canada's first medal at the Olympics.

Early Life and Education

Mark Lee McMorris was born on December 9, 1993, in Regina, Saskatchewan. His father, Don McMorris, is a provincial politician, and his mother, Cindy, is a nurse. His older brother, Craig, is a professional snowboarder. Mark attended Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School. Before making strides in snowboarding, McMorris was involved in wakeboarding, an extreme water sport. He has several tattoos, including one depicting wheat sheaves, a symbol of his home province, Saskatchewan.

Early Career and Achievements

In the 2009-2010 season, McMorris made his debut at the FIS Snowboarding World Cup, finishing eighth in big air in Quebec City. He later claimed first place in slopestyle at the World Cup in Calgary. McMorris took second place in slopestyle at the XV Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, behind his teammate Sebastien Toutant. He won the Air & Style snowboarding tournament in 2011, defeating Peetu Piiroinen, Werner Stock, and Nils Arvidsson in the final. McMorris set a record score of 98.00 in slopestyle at the X Games 2013 while defending his championship title. He also won a silver medal in big air. These achievements came just days after winning his first silver medal at the FIS Snowboarding World Cup in 2013.

Winter Olympics and Injury

At the 2014 Winter X Games, McMorris finished in second place in slopestyle, behind fellow Canadian Max Parrot. Initially, McMorris aimed to surpass all his competitors but fell and broke his rib on his third and final run. Despite his injury, he competed in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, stating that he felt great. McMorris finished in third place in slopestyle. Although he fell during his first qualifying run, he performed well enough in the finals to secure a spot on the podium. The preparation for the Olympics and the battle with his injuries brought a whirlwind of emotions for McMorris, who ultimately expressed satisfaction with his Olympic bronze medal.

Currently, Mark McMorris is in a relationship with American professional surfer Coco Ho.
