Early Career and Move to A-League
Mark Milligan began his professional football career in the lower-tier Australian leagues with Northern Spirit and Blacktown City. In 2005, he joined A-League club Sydney FC, spending three seasons with the team. He later moved to another A-League side, Newcastle United Jets, for a single season.
Overseas Adventure in Asia
In 2009, Milligan ventured overseas, opting for Asia instead of Europe as most Australian players. He played one season with Shanghai Shenhua in China before joining Japanese club JEF United in 2010.
Return to Australia and National Team Debut
In January 2012, Milligan was loaned to Melbourne Victory and subsequently signed a three-year contract with the club in the summer of 2012. He made his debut for the Australian national team in 2006 and was a part of the squad for the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, although he did not play in any matches.
