Early Life and Career

Nico Kovac, a Croatian footballer, was born in West Berlin on August 15, 1971, to Croatian migrant workers from Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Growing up in Berlin, he developed a passion for football at an early age.

Club Career

Kovac began his football journey in 1989 with Hertha 03 Zehlendorf, a local club in Berlin. In 1991, he made the move to Hertha BSC, where he spent the next five seasons and made his Bundesliga debut in 1996.

In 1996, Kovac signed for Bayer Leverkusen, where he played for three seasons alongside his younger brother, Robert. He made 77 appearances for Leverkusen, scoring eight goals.

In 1999, Kovac joined Hamburg SV, where he spent two seasons, making 55 Bundesliga appearances and scoring 12 goals. In 2001, he joined Bayern Munich, where he reunited with his brother but struggled for playing time.

Kovac returned to Hertha BSC in 2003, where he played for three seasons. He left Hertha in 2006 after the World Cup in Germany, where he captained the Croatian national team. He then moved to Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, where he played until his retirement in 2009.

International Career

Kovac made his international debut for Croatia in a friendly match against Morocco in 1996. He was part of the Croatian squad for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, as well as the Euro 2004 and 2008 tournaments. Kovac became captain of the national team in 2004, a role he held until his retirement. He retired from international football on May 29, 2009, having made over 80 appearances for Croatia.

Legacy

Nico Kovac is regarded as one of the most successful Croatian footballers of all time. He has won numerous titles with his clubs and has been capped over 80 times for his country.
