Early Life and Education
Born in Amarillo, Texas, in 1959, Mark Seliger grew up with two older brothers and a younger sister. The family relocated to Houston in 1964. Seliger developed a passion for photography at a young age, experimenting with processing prints in his bathroom. After graduating from Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, he pursued a degree in documentary photography at the University of Texas.
Career at Rolling Stone
In 1984, Seliger moved to New York City. He soon began shooting assignments for Rolling Stone and became the magazine's chief photographer in 1992. Over a decade-long tenure, Seliger captured 125 covers for Rolling Stone, establishing himself as a renowned photography figure.
Collaborations with Condé Nast
After leaving Rolling Stone, Seliger joined the Condé Nast family. His work has graced the pages of GQ, Vanity Fair, Elle, L'Uomo Vogue, Italian Vogue, and German Vogue. Seliger's bold, unconventional, and provocative style has become synonymous with celebrity portraiture.
