Jonas Zingeris: Lithuanian Writer, Poet, and Scholar
Early Life and EducationJonas Zingeris was born in Lithuania and pursued journalism at Vilnius University, graduating in 1971. His commitment to his beliefs led to his dismissal from both teaching positions and a philosophy graduate program.
Career in Academia and Journalism
Zingeris's unwavering principles resulted in him working in various institutions, including the Vytautas the Great War Museum, Lithuanian University of Agriculture, and Vilnius University.
Literary Acclaim
Zingeris's writing has gained widespread recognition. He has published poetry collections such as "House of Cedar" (1984), "Evening in Childhood" (1989), and "A Hundred Sunsets" (1993), as well as short stories titled "Illusion" (2000) and novels like "Around the Fountain, or Little Paris" (1998) and "Playing Two" (2002).
Translation and Cross-Cultural Exchange
Zingeris's work has been translated into nine languages, bridging cultural divides. He has also translated Isaac Bashevis-Singer's stories and Joseph Brodsky's poems into Lithuanian.
Advocacy and Public Service
Zingeris has dedicated himself to understanding and fostering dialogue between Lithuanians and Jews. He served as Program Director for the International Commission on the Investigation of Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania (1999) and is the Head of the Lithuanian Public Center for Understanding between Lithuanians and Jews.
Recognition and Affiliations
Zingeris is a member of the Writers' Union of Lithuania and the Lithuanian PEN Club. He is the younger brother of Lithuanian politician Emanuelis Zingeris. Zingeris currently resides and works in Vilnius.
