Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Markéta Irglová was born on February 28, 1988, in Valašské Meziříčí, Czech Republic. From a young age, she had a passion for music. At the age of seven, she began playing the piano, and at nine, her father gifted her a guitar, which she used to compose her own songs.

The Swell Season and "Once"

Irglová was acquainted with Glen Hansard from her childhood, as her father assisted him with concert organization. It was Hansard who came up with the idea to form the duo "The Swell Season", which marked the beginning of their collaboration. In 2006, they released an album under the label "Overcoat Recordings" and soon after, received an offer to play the lead roles in the indie film "Once". The film is set in Dublin, Ireland, where a lonely street musician meets a girl who completely changes his life. Together, they perform his songs, getting to know each other better, but ultimately, the love that was supposed to start never does.

Success of "Once"

The filmmakers of "Once" placed special emphasis on the music, which played almost continuously throughout the film. Each song was written by Irglová and Hansard specifically for the film, and they had to re-record each song during production due to budget constraints. Despite its low budget, "Once" received rave reviews from critics who praised not only the music in the film but also the performances of the musicians, for whom these were their debut acting roles.
