Marco Grujić: Serbian Football Prodigy
Marco Grujić is a Serbian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Liverpool FC. Currently, he is on loan to Cardiff City.
Early Career at Red Star Belgrade
Grujić began his professional career at Red Star Belgrade, making his debut in May 2013. In 2014, he played for Red Star Belgrade and Kolubara on a dual contract. In January 2015, Roma made an offer to acquire Grujić, which Red Star Belgrade declined. Other clubs, including Hamburger SV, Benfica, and Sampdoria, also expressed interest in the young midfielder. Despite this, Grujić signed a new contract with Red Star Belgrade, extending his stay until 2018.
Transfer to Liverpool
In December 2015, Liverpool FC announced they had agreed to purchase Grujić from Red Star Belgrade for a fee of £5.1 million. However, Grujić's father initially opposed the move to England, going as far as confiscating his son's passport. On January 6, 2016, Liverpool officially announced Grujić's signing on a four-year contract. As part of the deal, he would remain at Red Star Belgrade for the remainder of the 2015/16 season before joining Liverpool on July 1, 2016.
Playing Style and Liverpool Debut
Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool's manager at the time, praised Grujić's speed, technique, and ability to both pass and dribble effectively. Grujić made his debut for Liverpool in a friendly against Tranmere Rovers in July 2016.
International Career
Grujić has represented Serbia at various youth levels, including in the qualifying tournaments for the 2014 European Under-17 Championship and the 2015 European Under-19 Championship. He played a significant role in Serbia's victory at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, appearing in five matches.
