Sokoloff was raised in a Jewish household. Her mother, Cindy, worked in the supply industry, and her father, Howard, was a pediatrician. She attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and began her acting career at the age of 12.

In 1993, at the age of 12, Sokoloff landed her first major role as a series regular on the ABC sitcom "Full House." She portrayed the main antagonist to Stephanie Tanner's character and formed a friendship with the actress who played Stephanie. In 1998, Sokoloff gained recognition for her role as Lucy Hatcher in the series "The Practice," which opened doors for her in the industry. She also appeared in a three-episode arc on "Desperate Housewives" as a nanny and had a memorable guest role as Joey's pregnant sister in the eighth season of the popular sitcom "Friends."
