Early Life and Influences

As a child, renowned blues singer Smugly Black Beauty Marlene sang gospel and spirituals in church and French chanson at school. These diverse musical influences laid the foundation for her unique style.

Arrival in Belgium and Theatrical Debut

In 1991, Marlene embarked on a journey to Belgium, where she currently resides. Her early years there were marked by performances as an actress and singer in the play "Mesy Bondye Verdomme" and as a soloist with Haitian groups, including the Creole Blues Septet.

Voodoo Cult and Collaboration

The vibrant Voodoo cult, an integral part of Haitian culture, became a recurring theme in Marlene's work. Inspired by her talent, Belgian musicians such as Chris Joris and Dizzy Manjeku encouraged her to launch a solo career under her own name.

Solo Career and Global Recognition

Marlene's solo debut performances took place in 2000 in Belgium, followed by concerts in Amsterdam, Cologne, and Paris. Her songs gained international acclaim after three of them were featured on the Belgian radio compilation "Le Monde est un Village" in 2001.

Album Debut and Chart Success

The release of Marlene's debut solo album, "Mesy" (Contre-Jour), in 2002 marked a significant milestone. The album spent several months in the top ten of the World Music Charts Europe and ranked second in Russia's world music charts in August 2002.

Global Performances and Activism

Since her album's success, Marlene has shared her Haitian roots and culture with audiences worldwide as a vocalist and songwriter. She has performed at over 30 festivals in Europe in recent years. Through her music and activism, she advocates for the rights of women and children in Haiti.
