Biography of Marrit Leenstra
Marrit Leenstra is a Dutch long-distance speed skater. She showed great results at the national level even as a junior, and transitioning to the senior level was not easy. However, Leenstra eventually adapted and proved herself by winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games.

Early Career
Leenstra's first successful performance dates back to 2004 when she placed third in the Junior C category at the national championship in the classic all-around event. In 2005, she competed in the Junior B category and finished fifth. The following year, Leenstra won first place in the classic all-around event and finished second in the national sprint championship as a Junior A competitor.

International Competitions
In 2007, Leenstra made her debut in the World Cup in Moscow. She achieved fourth place in the classic all-around event and third place in the sprint at the national championship. In 2008, she set a world record among juniors in the 1500 meters at the Salt Lake City World Cup. Leenstra also qualified for the European Championships and finished sixth overall. She participated in the World Allround Championships, where she placed 12th. In February of the same year, Leenstra became the world junior champion in Changchun, China. By the end of the season, she had improved her performance significantly, setting new junior world records in the 1000 meters, 1500 meters, and mini-combination.

Continued Success and Setbacks
In 2009, Leenstra did not qualify for the European Championships and missed out on the World Sprint Championships and World Allround Championships. However, she competed in the World Single Distance Championships and finished in 10th place in the 1500 meters. From 2009 onwards, Leenstra exclusively competed at the senior level. In 2010, she faced disappointment when she failed to qualify for the Winter Olympic Games. However, she bounced back in 2011, winning the national championship, placing third in the European Championships, and fourth in the World Allround Championships. Additionally, she achieved notable results in the World Single Distances Championships, finishing fourth in the 1000 meters and second in the team pursuit and the 1500 meters World Cup race in Salt Lake City.

Recent Achievements
In 2012, Leenstra won the national championship in the classic all-around event. The following year, she teamed up with Diane Valkenburg and Irene Wüst to win the team pursuit event at the World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships in Sochi. Returning to Sochi in 2014 for the Olympic Games, Leenstra had another stroke of luck and won gold in the team pursuit event. Currently, Marrit Leenstra is engaged to Italian speed skater Matteo Anesi, who is also an Olympic gold medalist.
