Marshall Crenshaw is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist, best known for his hit song 'Someday, Someway' which reached the Top-40 in 1982.
Early Life and Career
Crenshaw was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Berkley, Michigan. He started playing the guitar at the age of 10. From 1968 to 1973, Crenshaw led the band 'Astigafa'. His first major project was portraying John Lennon in the musical 'Beatlemania'.
Music Career
After recording his first single 'Something's Gonna Happen' under the label 'Shake Records' in New York, Crenshaw signed a contract with 'Warner Bros Records'. With the support of Robert Gordon, 'Someday, Someway' reached the 76th position on the charts. In the same year, Crenshaw's self-written version of the song entered the 'Billboard Top 40', peaking at number 36. This became Crenshaw's highest-ranking song in the 'Billboard Top 40'. The song also reached the 31st position on the 'Cash Box' chart.
Throughout the decade, Crenshaw primarily worked in radio and his music was regularly played on rock album stations. He gained considerable success and became a legend in his home state of Michigan.
In 1982, Crenshaw released his first album titled 'Marshall Crenshaw', which included the hit song 'Someday, Someway'. His second album, 'Field Day', was released in 1983 and featured heavier compositions like 'Whenever You're On My Mind'. While the change in style didn't appeal to all of his fans, critics later considered 'Whenever You're On My Mind' as Crenshaw's best work and one of the main power pop masterpieces.
Influence and Later Career
Crenshaw's music is influenced by classic soul, British Invasion melodies, and the works of Burt Bacharach and Buddy Holly. He was often compared to Buddy Holly, especially at the beginning of his career. In 1987, Crenshaw portrayed Holly in the film 'La Bamba'.
In 1989, Crenshaw released the country-style compilation album 'Hillbilly Music... Thank God, Vol. 1' under the label 'Capitol Records'. The album included masterpieces from 1950s and 1960s artists and was warmly received.
In 1993, Crenshaw appeared in the cult television show 'The Adventures of Pete and Pete'. In 1994, he published the book 'Hollywood Rock: A Guide to Rock 'n' Roll in the Movies'.
Crenshaw continued recording in the 1990s and 2000s. In 1999, he released the successful album '#447' which received positive reviews from critics.
In 2007, Crenshaw wrote the theme song for the film 'Walk Hard' starring John C. Reilly. The song, performed by Reilly, was later nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
