Marshall Goldsmith: Biography of an American Business Consultant and Leadership Development Expert
Marshall Goldsmith is an American business consultant, leadership development practitioner, and author. He is one of the few advisors and mentors who have been invited to work with over 150 top executives and their management teams. In 2011, Dr. Goldsmith was honored with the prestigious Thinkers 50 Leadership Award, which is presented to the world's top thinkers. In 2005, he was elected as a member of the National Academy of Human Resources (NAHR) and recognized by Business Week as one of the most influential practitioners in the history of leadership development. The American Management Association also named Goldsmith one of the 50 greatest thinkers and business leaders who have influenced the field of management in the past 80 years.
Early Life and Education
Marshall Goldsmith was born in Valley Station, Kentucky. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. In 1977, he received a Ph.D. in management from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. From 1976 to 1980, Goldsmith served as an assistant professor and later as the deputy dean at the business college of Loyola Marymount University. Currently, he leads academic programs for developing future leaders among business school graduates worldwide and frequently speaks at leading business schools.
Pioneering Leadership Development
Goldsmith was a pioneer in using the "360-degree feedback" method, which involves surveying an employee's business environment to assess their suitability for their position. He used this tool to determine employees' ratings and promoted its usage among executives. Gradually, Goldsmith became a mentor to top executives worldwide and an author of his coaching methods. In recognition of his work, he was named one of the top 10 executive educators by the Wall Street Journal in 1993. During his tenure as a board member of the Peter Drucker Foundation in 1996, Goldsmith completed his first book, "The Leader of the Future," co-edited with Frances Hesselbein and Richard Beckhard. The book's foreword was written by influential management theorist Peter Drucker. "The Leader of the Future" has been translated into 28 languages and sold hundreds of thousands of copies. Goldsmith has authored or co-authored 32 books, including the bestseller "What Got You Here Won't Get You There," which discusses how the tactics that helped someone climb the corporate ladder may not be effective for further advancement. This book received the Harold Longman Award for Best Business Book of the Year.
Personal Life
Marshall Goldsmith and his wife, Lyda Goldsmith, reside in Rancho Santa Fe, California. The couple has two children, Bryan and Kelly. Kelly participated in the third season of the reality show "Survivor," which took place in Africa. She holds a Ph.D. from Yale University and is currently a senior lecturer in the marketing department of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Bryan is involved in real estate business in Austin, Texas.
