Tragic Suicide of Marta Galikowska and Murder of Her Daughters
Marta Galikowska, a 27-year-old British-Polish woman, tragically took the lives of her two young daughters before ending her own life. The depressed mother mistakenly believed that her eldest daughter, Maya, had cancer and convinced herself that she needed to save her from the illness. On October 12, 2014, Galikowska fatally stabbed Maya and then proceeded to kill her 20-month-old daughter, Olga. Galikowska's husband, 28-year-old refuse collector Marcin Galikowski, discovered the bodies of his wife and children around 6:35 p.m. Initially, Marcin was taken into custody by the police but was released without charges. It later came to light that Marta had been prescribed antidepressants by her general practitioner just a week before the tragedy. She had been making threats to her husband about wanting to take her own life and kill the children, which prompted the involvement of social services. However, after speaking with Galikowska, the social workers decided that there was no immediate threat to the children.

Galikowska, originally from Przemysl, a city in southeast Poland, had expressed concerns to social workers that her daughters would be taken away from her. Both girls died from stab wounds. Further investigations revealed that the lump under Maya's jaw was a benign cyst. Ian Smith, the senior coroner for Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire, stated during the court hearing that Marta's case was the most emotionally challenging in his entire career. He remarked that the murders and suicide were acts of twisted love, driven by Marta's belief that she was protecting her daughters from an inevitable death.
A Loving Couple and Tragic Loss
Marta and Marcin moved to Stoke-on-Trent in 2010 in search of work opportunities. They had met approximately seven years prior when both had immigrated to the United Kingdom from Poland. The couple attended a Roman Catholic church together. They got married in 2008, shortly before the birth of their first daughter, Maya. Marcin worked at a lumberyard for a period before becoming a refuse collector, while Marta initially worked as a waitress and then became a homemaker.

Neighbors of Marta and Marcin spoke warmly about the couple and their children in the aftermath of the tragedy. Matthew Horton, a 30-year-old neighbor, recounted hearing a woman's screams and witnessing Marta in a hysterical state, claiming that everyone was dead and had been killed.
