Martha Norelius: A Trailblazing American Swimmer

Martha Maria Norelius was an American swimmer who made history as a three-time Olympic champion.

Early Life and Olympic Debut

Born in Stockholm in 1909 to Swedish swimmer Charles Norelius, Martha moved to the United States in 1912. Her father became her coach. In 1924, at the age of 15, she achieved international triumph at the Olympic Games in Paris, winning the 400-meter freestyle and setting a new world record.

Olympic Success and Legacy

Norelius repeated her victory in the 400-meter freestyle at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. She also earned a gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, becoming the first American woman to win multiple medals at two different Olympics. Throughout her career, she established 30 American and 19 world records.

Personal Life and Later Years

Martha Norelius married three times. Her first marriage to Wirt McAlister ended in divorce. In 1930, she married rower Joseph Wright Jr., with whom she had two daughters. Her third marriage was to Alanson Brown, and they welcomed three daughters.

Tragic Demise and Hall of Fame Honor

In 1955, at the age of 46, Norelius passed away in St. Louis after a gallbladder surgery. Twelve years later, she was posthumously inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, with her parents receiving the honor on her behalf.
