Martin Brauen: Swiss Anthropologist, Bhutanese and Tibetan Scholar

Martin Brauen, a Swiss anthropologist, has extensively studied Bhutan and Tibet. After completing his studies in Cultural Anthropology and Religious Studies at the University of Zurich, he pursued Buddhist studies at the University of Delhi. He later earned his doctorate from the University of Zurich with a dissertation on festivals and rituals in Ladakh.

Career and Research

In 1975, Brauen joined the Ethnographic Museum of the University of Zurich as the Curator of the Department of Far East and Himalayas. Concurrently, he also taught at the university. His expertise in Bhutanese and Tibetan culture has led him to conduct extensive field research in these regions.

Museum Curatorship

In 2008, Brauen moved to New York City to become the Curator of the Rubin Museum of Art. This renowned institution showcases Himalayan art and culture, providing Brauen with a platform to share his knowledge and passion with a broader audience.
