Martin Gerber: A Swiss Professional Ice Hockey Player
Martin Gerber, also known as "Herbs," was born on September 3, 1974, in Burgdorf, Switzerland. He is a Swiss professional ice hockey player and currently plays as a goaltender for the Moscow-based hockey club 'Atlant' in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
Early Career
Gerber began his career in his home country, playing for the 'SCL Tigers' club in Langnau. In 1998, he joined the Swiss National League and played for various teams. In 2001, Gerber was drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the eighth round, 232nd overall, in the NHL Draft.
NHL Career
Gerber made his NHL debut with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in October 2002, playing against the Dallas Stars. He appeared in a total of 22 games that season. Gerber played for several teams in the NHL, including the Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He won the Stanley Cup in 2006 as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes.
International Success
Gerber represented Switzerland internationally, including participating in the 2006 Winter Olympics. He made 49 saves in a game against the Canadian national team, showcasing his skills on an international stage.
Move to KHL
After playing in the NHL, Gerber signed a contract with the Atlant club in the KHL in July 2009. Unfortunately, during a match against Vityaz on December 13, Gerber suffered a serious neck injury while colliding with Alexander Romanov.
Personal Life
During the 2008-2009 season, Gerber wore a black mask, earning him the nickname "Darth Gerber" among fans. He has shown his dedication to the sport and remains a respected figure in the ice hockey community.
