Early Life and Education
Keith Gessen was born in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, in 1948. He earned a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School and a B.A. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970.
International Economics
In 1971, Gessen obtained a Certificate in International Relations from the Bologna Center of the Johns Hopkins University. He continued his studies at the London School of Economics, receiving an M.Sc. in 1972 and a Ph.D. in economics in 1981.
Career at the OECD and IMF
From 1975 to 1981, Gessen worked as an economist for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris. He then joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1981, where he remained until 2005.
During his tenure at the IMF, Gessen served as the Resident Representative in Russia from 1996 to 2002. He witnessed firsthand the Russian economic crisis of 1998, which he later chronicled in his book "Default, Which Could Have Been Avoided" (2008).
Academic Affiliations
In 2000, Gessen became an Honorary Professor at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow. He also serves as the Director of the Institute for Fundamental Interdisciplinary Research at HSE.
